A Legacy of Elegance and Tradition
Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Viterbo, our villa’s history is a tapestry woven through centuries, echoing the legacy of its illustrious past. From its origins as an agricultural estate in the 1500s to its transformation into a luxurious haven of hospitality, the villa embodies a timeless charm that captivates all who visit.
1500: the villa came under the ownership of Giacomo Sacchi, a prominent member of a wealthy Viterbo family. It served as the nucleus for agricultural activities and estate management. This legacy of stewardship was carried forward by his son, Orazio Sacchi, who married Giulia Tignosini in 1586 in the estate’s own chapel. A year later, Giacomo Sacchi’s will emphasized the importance of preserving the estate within the family, ensuring its prosperity for generations to come.
1650: the Sacchi family’s stewardship came to an end in 1650 when the villa was sold to the Dominican fathers of Santa Maria in Gradi. They transformed it into a summer residence, hosting distinguished guests and enriching its history. Among these guests was Father Joachim de Teran, who in 1797 may have played a role in the villa’s restoration.
The 19th Century: in 1812, during a period of French occupation, Luigi Rossi Danielli purchased the the basilica of Santa Maria della Quercia, in Viterbo, to protect it from potential plunder. Once the French departed, his act of generosity saw the basilica of Santa Maria della Quercia returned to the Dominicans, who in gratitude gifted him the villa. For much of the 19th century, it became the cherished summer retreat of the Rossi Danielli family.
The Mid-20th Century: between 1960 and 1970, the villa welcomed King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden. Renowned as an archaeologist, he conducted significant excavations in the nearby areas of Acquarossa and Ferento, which were part of the Rossi Danielli estate. His visits further cemented the villa’s reputation as a place of cultural and historical significance.
Modern Era: in 1999, Luigi Catalano Rossi Danielli inherited the villa, initiating a new era of transformation. Between 2000 and 2005, meticulous renovations restored the property, including the villa and its accompanying farmhouse, to their former glory. By 2006, it had joined the ranks of high-profile luxury hotels, offering guests an unparalleled blend of history and elegance.
2010 and Beyond: the villa has since hosted an array of prominent figures, including Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Harry Styles, who have been captivated by its beauty and allure during their summer sojourns. Today, it continues to attract luminaries from the worlds of archaeology, culture, and hospitality, standing as a testament to its enduring legacy.
